Cary Hazlegrove,
To anyone who appreciates Nantucket’s natural beauty and architectural uniqueness, Cary Hazlegrove needs no introduction. She has been photographing the island since she arrived from Virginia in 1978. In Cary’s words, “I fell in love with the island the second my feet hit the ground.” During her early years on Nantucket, Cary worked for Gene Mahon at the Roadhouse and did a stint at the Company of the Cauldron. Her first book project was a collaboration with Jean-Charles Berruet of the Chanticleer, called Here’s to Nantucket. Cary is probably best known for her glorious books of photographs, especially the best-selling Nantucket: Seasons on the Island, and for her Nantucket slide shows, which started in 1980 and ran for twenty-three years. For fans of Cary’s work, the news is good: Cary is putting together a new slide show, and she celebrates Nantucket in the off-season in her forthcoming book, Nantucket: The Quiet Season, which features an introduction by Nathaniel Philbrick.
It is Cary’s reverence for authentic Nantucket architecture that prompted her to join the board of the Nantucket Preservation Trust. She loves the “peeling paint and disarray” of certain old Nantucket cottages, and it is her great hope that everyone on Nantucket will build to scale.

Cary lives year-round in ‘Sconset with her husband, Andy Bullington, and their daughter, Virginia.
