Georgia Raysman
Chair

Georgia Urbano Raysman,
joined the NPT Board in 1999, and served as President from July 2001-2003. She is now Chairman of the Board, Director of the Governance Committee, and has responsibility for Annual Meetings. Georgia’s husband, Richard, introduced her to the island in 1986 with a week at Wade Cottages, and they’ve been back to ‘Sconset each summer since then. Julia arrived in 1990, Peter in 1992, and in 1995 the family bought their house on Low Beach Road. Georgia, who received her law degree from Columbia University, joined the Zoning Subcommittee of the Siasconset Planning Committee in 1998, and the next year authored Saving ‘Sconset, a brochure on historic preservation restrictions, for the ‘Sconset Trust, which triggered the wider use of that technique there and in Nantucket town. Her interests include Shakespeare, opera, bridge, and history. But above all, architecture, Nantucket architecture, is her passion. Hear her: “Because on-island we have the ‘real thing’ and not a re-creation, it is our responsibility to restore and maintain our unique historic environment. That is why the NPT holds historic preservation restrictions and that is why education about architecture is central to our purpose.” There you have our mission, articulated by one of our most enduring and significant Directors.
