![]() The Office The Nantucket Preservation Trust is located at Two Union Street in the heart of downtown Nantucket. The brick building, owned by the Nantucket Historical Association, was built in two parts before 1830, and was used as the Coffin and Athearn stores. The Great Fire of 1846 left only the walls standing, but the records were rescued. By 1884, the north section was bought for use as the Town House, and joined with the south unit for these Town Departments: Registry of Deeds; Tax Collector; Agent of Poor Department; Police Department; Town Treasurer; Town Clerk; Judge of Probate and Probate Office; Clerk of Courts; and Assessors. Despite being ruled unsafe by the State Department of Public Safety in 1961, the Town’s Offices remained at Two Union Street until May, 1966, when the new Broad Street Town and County Building was built. Come visit the NPT between 9:00 and 5:00, Monday through Friday. Check out the old vault. Ask about our programs to help you find out more about your old Nantucket house. Sign up for an architecture walking tour. Call 508-228-1387 for more information. |
