Although the kitchen needed a tremendous face-lift, gutting it would have been out of sync with the rest of the house and with the mission of preservation. I have filled the room with modern equipment, commercial in feel, and replaced the lighting where space in the ceiling allowed.

The backsplash was replaced with vintage-looking, crackled tile with a hand-painted border that could be 150 years old. The linoleum, begging to be covered after years of dutiful service, was replaced with natural slate, both elegant and rustic. The eclectic collection of china patterns evokes a bygone time when homes had china for many purposes…one for spring, one for holidays, one for company, and one for… just us.

The area at the end of the kitchen has been turned into a combination potting room and breakfast nook. The existing wall sconces were restored and the walls enhanced by a Rufus Porter-style mural
