A Note on Nantucket Fairy Lore

In the heart of Nantucket’s hidden forest, lawns and moors dwells a world beyond our own…it’s the world of the fairies. Long, long ago, the fairies arrived on our Island by whaling ships from other fairylands far away. Legend has it, the first sighting was made by a small boy in the early 1800’s, when he discovered a fairy-ring while looking for peepers by the Lily Pond on Liberty Street. Fairy spotting is a skill, you know. Only the very privileged are worthy of a sighting. On Nantucket, our fairies are not like other fairies. They prefer not to be looked at. Our fairy folk are as diverse as we are and we should not seek to know too much, for it is unlucky to meddle or talk loosely or disrespectfully about them.
