(1st Floor) The North Chamber: Kathleen Hay Design & Decoration
Dear Journal,
Have just returned from an unforgettable adventure on the Dark Continent…an experience of a lifetime. There among the ancient tribes and wild beasts, I found an oasis of unparalleled escape. The stark contrasts of the natural world will remain in my mind’s eye for many years to come. While traversing the ruddy landscape early one morning, there appeared a herd of zebra from the mist, their graphic black and white stripes so satisfying an image against the expansive straw of the unending landscape, dotted only occasionally with the blue of a watering hole and the green of the patches of brush. The equine form of these creatures, and especially their coat of zigzagging symmetry, is always a source of inspiration for me, specifically the painting over the study mantle which captures their quiet dignity and inspired grace. Not to be outdone are the random spots of the leopard: lush, rich, majestic, and evocative of mystery and power. They are equally as fascinating as the zebra’s stripes; both are perfect reminders of the incredible bounty of texture, pattern and form in the natural world. Happened upon an open market and there collected two strands of eons-old concha beads…their smooth weightiness will serve as a strong reminder of my fantastic voyage. Home now at India Street. Pleased to be ensconced again in my study, enveloped by the historic mantle of this home and the many treasures I have collected in places great and small.
